Patcay.com – Arm Holdings has unveiled new designs and software tools aimed at enhancing the artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities of smartphones. These innovations include advanced central processing units (CPUs) and graphics processing units (GPUs) specifically optimized for AI tasks.
The company is also introducing software tools to facilitate the integration and execution of AI applications, such as chatbots, on Arm-powered devices.
A significant shift in Arm’s strategy involves how it delivers these new technologies. Traditionally, Arm provided its intellectual property as either specifications or abstract designs.

These would then need to be converted into physical blueprints by chip manufacturers, a complex process involving the intricate arrangement of billions of transistors.
To streamline this, Arm has collaborated with Samsung Electronics and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to produce ready-for-manufacturing blueprints of physical chip designs.
This approach is intended to accelerate the time-to-market for chip manufacturers, enabling them to focus more on integrating other critical components such as neural processing units (NPUs).

NPUs are essential for optimal AI performance, and their significance is highlighted by companies like Microsoft, which has indicated that certain AI features require NPUs to function.
Despite these advancements, Arm is not venturing into NPU technology for phones and PCs just yet. Instead, the company aims to provide comprehensive, ready-made designs that can be easily integrated with NPUs developed by other firms. Chris Bergey, Arm’s senior vice president and general manager of the client line of business, emphasized that Arm’s goal is to facilitate faster market entry for its customers, not to compete with them. This collaborative platform approach allows for the close coupling of various accelerators, enhancing overall AI performance on devices.
